SSB Blog

Welcome to our blog

South Brent Community Radio has been going strong since 2013!

There’s still time to join in with the next Community Radio broadcast, so please get in touch - all ideas are welcome.

Check out the Facebook page to get an idea of the breadth and depth of previous broadcasts.

If you know you can’t listen live you need not miss a thing as all programmes are available online.

Here are a couple of pictures from the archive. Including a lovely one of Angie Vennells listening-in to a broadcast in 2015, and Alisdair the sound artist performing live.

Angie in the centre of the group of volunteer newsletter deliverers

It is with great sadness that we report on the death of Angie early in the new year.

Angie had for some time edited the quarterly newsletter and the e-bulletins for SSB, and also took responsibility for convening the Communications group.

Her commitment to the aims and achievements of SSB was second to none. She took immense care in gathering the various reports and news items and fashioned them into highly readable articles. Angie was renowned for working right up to the deadline - but always meeting it. As one of the contributors noted - "if the phone rings at 11pm on the evening before the newsletter is due at the printers…it will be Angie!”

She was not content with ‘second best’ - and would go to a huge amount of trouble to make sure the newsletter and bulletins were accurate and informative.

Angie rarely mentioned the health issues she was managing or that occasionally got in the way – she just got on with things.

Her generosity, good humour, enquiring mind and energy will be greatly missed.

Our love and condolences to Bill and the family.

Angie was a wonderful and truly dedicated friend to SSB producing both the quarterly Newsletter, regular Ebulletins and the Annual Report. Nothing was ever too much for Angie and she was regularly coming up with ideas and actions to improve communications and involvement with our membership. So many to mention... but including the competition to design the new SSB logo, the introduction of Anthony Jinman, Artic explorer, to our AGM in 2013, Pop Up Climate Change and Energy Shops, and involvement in our celebratory village events - Welcome to the Sun, The Wood Fair and our 10th Year celebrations, held in 2016.

Angie and Bill were also personal friends of many of us in SSB, and we will miss Angie’s fun and laughter, and enjoyable times spent together either working or socialising.

Thank you Angie for your time with us all, and to Bill, we will always be there for you.

'Saddle up in South Brent'. The latest series of small group   bike rides for 2017 starting in (or with a joining point in, or near to) South Brent, led by Sustrans volunteers in partnership with Sustainable South Brent. There will be a comprehensive range of difficulty, from rides for less experienced cyclists including families with children, to challenges for more experienced riders (anyone with an electric bike would also be welcome). The SSB Bike Bank cycles will be available for free loan, on a first come basis (see SSB link).

Sunday 19 February 2017: Meet at 10:00am at the Old School Community Centre in South Brent to cycle to Hannah’s at Ivybridge: Join us on a fun and friendly guided bike ride to meet residents at Hannah's School in Ivybridge - a great way to gain confidence in cycling and meet new people in your area.  We'll meet at South Brent with friendly and supportive Sustrans and SSB volunteers. We will be cycling seven miles to Ivybridge following National Cycle Route 2 along quiet roads taking in the beautiful surroundings and enjoying the countryside views then return the same way for 1pm. We'll spend time at Hannah's School to meet and engage with their local community see: www.sustrans.org.uk/events/ivybridge-guided-bike-ride.

Wednesday 22 February 2017: Dartmoor Way 'Dark Skies Ride' – night time guided bike ride from 6.30 – 8.30pm. Meet at The Watermark Centre, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ and join our friendly and supportive Sustrans and PL21 Transition Initiative volunteers for a beautiful night time ride along the Dartmoor Way and discover your local area by starlight. We will be cycling six miles to Cornwood for light refreshments at the local Inn, then return the same way. You will sense the countryside, listen to rivers rushing beside you and you may even hear owls hooting! A fantastic opportunity for a mini adventure, meet new people and help you gain confidence. This is a true dark sky area so good lights and warm clothing are essential. Rides are open to anyone but you need to be reasonably fit and be prepared for changeable weather. The event must be pre-booked 24 hours beforehand and will be run on another date if there is an adverse weather forecast – see www.sustrans.org.uk/events/dartmoor-way-nighttime-guided-bike-ride.
