Wood Fair

Saturday 9 September - A great effort from everyone - thank you for a great day



Visitors to the Wood Fair can enjoy a rich and varied programme of talks and presentations, workshops, poetry, music and stories taking place throughout the day – all free of charge.

Poetry and story telling will be provided by:

  • Steph Bradley (11.30am-12.00)
  • Jackie Juno (1.30-2.30pm) who is also running a creative poetry writing workshop (11.30am-12.30pm)
  • Rowan Wylie (3.30-4.00pm)

Music will be performed by:

  • Sally MacIver and friends on recorders (10.30-11.00am)
  • John Rawlinson on mountain dulcimers and other wooden acoustic stringed instruments(12.00-12.30pm)
  • Chartwell Dutiro on mbira – music and storied=s from Zimbawe (4.00-4.40pm)

Talks will include:

  • Woodland ecology  - by Stephen Lees of Wildlife Woodlands (11.00-11.30am)
  • Getting more from our woodlands - by Mike Gardner of the Dartington Hall Estate (1.00-1.30pm)
  • Woodland conservation on Dartmoor – by Doug King-Smith of the Hillyfield Woodland Farm (2.30-3.00pm)
  • Home grown timber in sustainable building- by Duncan Passmore of Schumacher College (3.00-3.25pm)
  • Hedges and Woodfulel – by Rob Wolton (2-2.30pm)
  • Sustainable wood fuel from Dartmoor – by Andy Bradford of Dartmoor Woodfuel Cooperative (3.30-4.00pm)
  • Hedge harvesting methods and machinery – by Harry Jennings (4-4.40pm)



Those wanting to explore trees and woods with all their senses can take part in a range of short local guided walks starting and finishing at the Wood Fair, all free of charge.

  • guided walk to Penstave Copse, led by Richard Brown of the Woodland Trust (11am-1pm);
  • foraging foray, led by Liz Turner, founder of Trees for Health; (11.30-1pm)
  • earth walk, led by Mark Jefferys; (12.30-1.30pm)
  • creative journey, led by Emma Capper; (2.00-3.00pm)

The last three will particularly appeal to children as well as adults. Other participative activities for children on the day include:

  • shadow puppetry, led by Kate Stubbs (12.30-1.30pm)
  • archery, led by Sylvan Adventures (small charge applies)
  • willow weaving, led by Basket Makers South West
  • craft activities, led by Dartmoor National Park Authority
  • tree quiz, led by Moor Trees
  • craft activities, led by Naturemake


A great line-up of exhibitors will make the South Brent Wood Fair a real feast of everything woody! With local wood craft products all hand-made in the area, there will be something for everybody from guitars to fine furniture, from toys to trugs, from rocket logs to pods, from charcoal to oak joinery, from jewellery to sculpture, with plenty of opportunity to talk to the craftsmen and women about their work face-to-face. 

Wood chips will be flying with practical demonstrations throughout the day of pit sawing, pole lathing, wood shaving, log hewing, basketry and carving and other traditional woodmanship skills, with opportunities to have a go at some of the activities.

Experts will be on hand to give information and advice on conservation, woodland and tree management, grants, tree planting, and opportunities for getting involved in practical projects in the area.
